Flash cards are a learning tool that helps develop children's memorization skills.
Flash cards help in the learning of vocabulary, math problems, shapes and colors. It can also be used to develop more advanced skills.
Forming a Skill Base
Flash cards main purpose is to form the foundation for more advanced academic concepts to be developed in the future.
It is a quick way for students to be able to link concepts together and to gain repetitive exposure to words, colors, shapes, etc.
How It Works - An Example
1. A card has a shape of a square in front and the word SQUARE at the back.
2. First the shape is shown to the student and the teacher says "SQUARE".
3. When the student is able to link the word "SQUARE" with the shape, the teacher can flip over the card to link the vocalization of "SQUARE" with the printed word "SQUARE" and the square shape.
Building on the Skill Base
After your child has learned colors, numbers, shapes and letters, you child can now learn other skills such as:
Pairing pictures with words
The front of the flash card has a picture of something and the back has the printed word. Helps students learn to read and build their vocabulary.
Counting
The front normally has a group of items and the number is on the back Students can touch and count the items in front or they can count in their minds.
Advanced Skills
When students grow older, flash cards are normally used to improve language skills rather than help with memorizing facts. It can be used to develop foreign language skill by printing the foreign language on one side and the English version on the other.
Students can then practice by looking at the English phrase or by looking at the foreign phrase and translating it to the other.
